Why having Integrity and Risk Processes are a must for 21st Century Pipeline Operators?


Many of our oil and gas transmission pipelines have exceeded their design life, and several more are nearing it. Incidents with inadvertent releases are front page news bringing negative attention to operators; especially when some incidents have fatalities. Even the best designed and maintained pipelines can have failures if not managed in a very systematic manner. This very fact requires that the operators identify the necessary steps to mitigate, or at least minimize, the potential of failure by controlling the events.

This workshop attempts to discuss and amplify on the basic principles of pipeline integrity. Its goal is to bring a systems approach to pipeline integrity. In general, the discussion will introduce the following seven concepts:

  • What is Integrity Management?
  • What is Risk Management?
  • What causes affect the integrity of pipelines and facilities?
  • What steps could be taken to mitigate or limit risk to a pipeline?
  • What are resources that can be used to make integrity management effective?
  • What tools can be used to make the integrity management system effective?
  • How to use Risk Based analysis to optimize limited resources.


The improved technologies for inspection combined with modern defect assessment and maintenance methods can provide very powerful and cost-effective tools. This introductory course is designed to make participants of any level gain a fundamental understanding of the above concepts. It also provides attendees with techniques for developing integrity processes, risk evaluation and management of their pipeline data, while teaching the importance of correct evaluation for various inspection techniques.

In addition, this course introduces regulatory requirements and some basic concepts, such as pipe material terminologies, DSAW, ERW vs EW, LFW and HFW, NDE methods and their advantages and limitations, Risk, Probability, Consequence, Hazards, Hazardous Consequence Analysis, In-Line Inspections, etc.

The workshop is set up in a highly interactive format. We provide lectures, review case studies, discuss ongoing problems that the attendees are experiencing and brainstorm potential solutions that attendees can implement immediately.
